Padmapani with lotus is inspired from the famous Ajanta cave paintings. Padmapani in Sanskrit literally translates into “one who holds the lotus. This gold bronze kind of painting bodhisattva Padmapani ("lotus bearer") shows him as a graceful princely figure endowed with special attributes. He is described in the Buddhist canon as the embodiment of the pure, impartial, and limitless compassion of all the buddhas.


This painting is close to my heart and holds a special place.

The Supreme shakti, Maa Durga is worshiped with utmost devotion in Hindu religion. She is divine with a multi-dimensional demeanour. She is not only a nurturer but also a protector. She is worshipped as the Goddess of Strength. During Navratri, devotees worship the nine avatars of Maa Durga.
While Maa Durga’s saga is known to all her devotees, there are some interesting facts about Maa Durga that are still unknown to many:
She is considered to be the other half of Lord Shiva. While Shiva is the form, Durga is the expression.
Her arms signify directions. Each of her arms holds a weapon which signifies that She protects her devotees from all evil.She is seen riding a lion. While a lion signifies power, Maa Durga, who is sitting on a lion is the ultimate power, Shakti.
Goddess Durga is known as Triyambake which means She has three eyes. Her three eyes signify Agni, Surya and Chandra.
By her very name, Maa Durga can be conceived as the supreme power. The word ‘Durga’ means invincible.

Through the series 'Sister Misfortune', Smruthi Gargi Eswar compels us to question our attitudes - women towards themselves, and men towards women. How does the idea of a goddess coexist within every woman? How do we, as a society, so casually dismiss, disrespect, disregard, and defile in our everyday existence, those who we have bedecked with gold and enshrined in a temple?

This painting is part of my "Indian Village Women" series and depicts a mother’s love and hope for a better future for her child, which we can also symbolize with the lit “diya”, or candle in the artwork. The diya signifies warmth and brightness just like the village mother's love and hope.

This painting is a colorful visual map that takes you to little windows, darkened staircases, to show us what the artist means by ‘Reflection’ and ‘Alone’. Filled with different colours and shades, the artist takes us on a journey to his village on a moonless night or when the sun may have just set over the horizon.

Influenced by the pilgrimage sites, I see the Pilgrims come to see their deity and feel the peace. A Mata ni Pachedi depicting the ten mother goddesses and their mounts. An ancient religious art made in textiles dedicated to goddesses, Mata ni Pachedi literally translates to “behind the Mother Goddess” in Gujarati. The artform is practiced by the Vaghari nomads of Gujarat who live along the banks of the river Sabarmati.

I am fascinated by trees and the symbolism associated with the two. In India, plants occupy an important place in Hindu mythology. Sacred plants like Neem, Banyan, Pipal are revered for their auspicious or medicinal qualities or by association with a deity from the Hindu pantheon. For example, Kalpavriksha is a wish-fulfilling divine tree it came from Samudra Manthan (mythical episode of the churning of the ocean) with Lakshmi Devi. A form of nature worship, this motif was adapted by these religions as they became established in India.
