Hi! I am Arpa Mukhopadhyay, an international visual artist based in Pune, India. I believe that art is the greatest therapy known to mankind and I have been painting since the age of six. I am  drawn to themes of simplicity, love, and hope. All my artworks are based on vivid memories and experiences that I have had at various junctures of my life. I enjoy working with acrylics and mixed media. My paintings can be found in many private collections in India and abroad. They have also been a part of numerous art exhibitions and festivals the world over.

This painting depicts two Sadhvis lost in their praise to the Lord. Sadhvi is a Sanskrit term meaning a virtuous and pious woman. Most sadhvi’s choose to focus on a spiritual life. They spend most of their lives worshipping God, and reciting and singing hymns in His praise.

Religion

This painting was part of a dream that I had, last year. I could see various ships sailing in the ocean. I tried representing the same on canvas, with different color patterns depicting our sense of time or alternately, our various emotions.  Ships represent our own movement and transport in life. The ship’s self is a representation of our inner and hidden emotions. The water, on the other hand is symbolically a medium through which we can travel through different dimensions, emotions as well as timelines.

This art piece deals with the symbols of love, peace and unity. It is important to remember that all religions teach us to love and to live in peace. God is one with the universe. All of us have the same blood. It is red in color, whether we are Hindus or Christians or Muslims. We should love all and accept this simple truth.

Spirituality

In this painting, we can see the calm and composed stance of Buddha in meditation. There is peace and tranquility in the painting. The chaos outside (depicted by the multi-color textured) the mind is nullified by the immense power of meditation.

Part of my "Indian Village Women" series, this painting depicts two young girls from an Indian village, who are peeping from the door to see what's going on in the outside world.

Part of my "Indian village women" series, this painting depicts a village belle, who moves from village to village for getting water, trading different essentials, and earning her living. She represents the true essence of the country folk, for whom the borders or boundaries between villages don't matter. They keep toiling on with a smile on their faces.

Inspired by the great old Indian master painters, this art piece is a combination of contemporary and traditional art of Bengal, India. This painting is part of my "Indian Village Women" series and depicts a mother’s love and hope for a better future for her child, which we can also symbolize with the lit “diya”, or candle in the artwork. The diya signifies warmth and brightness just like the village mother's love and hope.

I have presented this artwork from my “The Indian Women”. We can see here - three musicians in a meditative stance in the Indian village. I wanted to depict the calming effect Indian music has on the artists and the listeners. One of the techniques I used in this painting was the play of colors to depict tranquility and peace.
