Oil paint is a form of slow-drying paint that allows artists to develop a painting gradually, making changes or corrections if necessary. Oil paints blend well with each other, making subtle variations of color possible. Furthermore, the transfer onto the canvas of light and shadow effects - chiaroscuro (Caravaggio), the layering of impasto brushwork (Rembrandt), or the dripping technique (Pollock) were all possible because of the physical qualities of oil paint.
