Oil paint is a form of slow-drying paint that allows artists to develop a painting gradually, making changes or corrections if necessary. Oil paints blend well with each other, making subtle variations of color possible. Furthermore, the transfer onto the canvas of light and shadow effects - chiaroscuro (Caravaggio), the layering of impasto brushwork (Rembrandt), or the dripping technique (Pollock) were all possible because of the physical qualities of oil paint. 

First developed in the 12th century, oil painting as a medium has been widely used ever since. Before the introduction of acrylics in the ‘50s, the masterpieces of western art, such as Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa and Van Gogh's Starry Night or Picasso’s Guernica are oil paintings on wood panels and later oil on canvas.
