Surrealism, inspired by Sigmund Freud’s theories of dreams and the unconscious was an artistic, intellectual, and literary movement led by poet André Breton in 1924. The movement aimed at liberating thought, language, and human experience from the boundaries of logic and rationalism. Surrealism followed Dadaism and inherited its anti-rationalist traits, but Surrealism is much lighter and playful in its execution. Surrealist art depicts unnerving, illogical scenes with photographic precision, and imagery that is impossible in reality, juxtaposing unlikely forms onto unimaginable landscapes. Salvador Dali, René Magritte, Frida Kahlo, Max Ernst, André Masson, Joan Miró, Man Ray, Dorothea Tanning, Leonora Carrington are some of the most important surrealist artists.
