Having two colors side by side interacting with one another has the power to alter the viewer’s perception. This is called simultaneous contrast. The contrast will affect our color sense. In the case of yellow and orange, when these two warm colors are in juxtaposition, we experience the illusion of colors emanating light from within. When facing such a painting, one becomes engulfed in light and feels drawn to it. Arguably, it releases spiritual power.

The simultaneous contrast between yellow and orange can create the illusion of colors emanating light from within. This is because the yellow color appears brighter when it is next to the orange color, and the orange color appears warmer when it is next to the yellow color. When we look at a painting or other artwork that uses yellow and orange, we can experience a sense of being engulfed in light. This can be a very calming and peaceful experience, and it can also be a very uplifting and energizing experience.

The most iconic artwork working with the concept of simultaneous contrast is Mark Rothko’s “Orange and Yellow”, created in 1956. The artist described it as a “gateway to a world of emotions”. Other famous artworks include Henri Matisse's "The Joy of Life" (1906) , Vincent van Gogh's "Sunflowers" (1888)
