Mythology

Hanuman or Anjaneya is renowned for his courage, power and faithful, selfless service to Lord Rama. The iconography in this painting includes the rudraksha in his ears and neck as the 11th Rudra avatar of the Lord Shiva, an orange colored vermilion chendoor tilaka on his forehead so that Lord Ram would be blessed with immortality, with Sethu bandana or the building of the bridge to Lanka to rescue Sita and his prayers to Gurudeva or Lord Rama’s Pattabhishekha

Traditional

The Matsya (fish) motif denotes the first avatar of Vishnu in the form of a fish described to have rescued the first man, Manu, from a great flood. The conch shell or Shankhya, represents life and creativity, and the sound that evolves from blowing it is the primeval sound of creation
which also embodies knowledge. Other motifs include Garuda as the vahana (mount) of Lord Vishnu, Kamadeva with the sugarcane bow and dhwaja (flag), betel leaf and the auspicious.

Contemporary

The reclining Buddha shows him lying on his right side, his head resting on his right elbow. It is meant to show that all beings have the potential to be awakened and be released from the cycle of death and rebirth.

Patanjali is Lord Vishnu’s snake Adishesha, the 1000 heads serpent who took birth on earth to cure the illness of people suffering from anger, lust, greed, and jealousy.  He holds the Shankh (conch), signifying the state of alertness, the chakra (disc) for destroying ignorance, crowned by a cobra, a symbol of protection.
The forehead is the amalgamation of the 5 elements of nature for the serenity of mind and body.
