This painting is my rendering of all the stages of the heart-wrenching process that is grieving.
It traces our journey from the moment we receive the news of someone or something dear lost coloured in a saturated flame; to being in denial; to being angry at ourselves and the world; to being sad and estranged; to spasmodic bursts of of rage and surprise at their remembrance and their absence; to finally holding on to their memories and and letting them go with resignation and accepting closure.

Dreams unravel secrets of the soul unbeknownst to people, that are sometimes obscured from even us. This painting is a pattern drawing inspiration from the Alhambra in Spain, one that appeared in my dream one day in all its glorious colours. The dream left me anxious as I woke, because the pattern appeared in my mind. I realised that such was my longing to be there in person that my soul had found a way to help me see where my heart truly belonged.

To contemplate the sheer expanse of one’s mind, the mind has often been compared to the likes of a beehive or a maze. I think of the mind as an ocean. I imagine it in rich blue colours getting deeper and darker as one’s thoughts intertwine with ever-increasing complexity. I imagine it getting clearer, leaching into white in fleeting moments of clarity where we get closer to the truth and untangle our mental mess.
