I consider myself a ‘Fusionist’, merging styles that inspire me, while playing with the fusion of East and West. I combine orientalism, primitivism and Japanese woodblock prints with western cubist principles and the expressionists’ use of colour, to create bright and vibrant figurative images.

An homage to twentieth century art, there is an obvious nod to Picasso in the blue nude that adorns the wall; to Matisse and his love of decorative patterns; and to Cezanne and the multiple viewpoints of cubism, all blended together in a modern take on an expressionist still life. The primary colours and bold lines create a joyful piece, full of energy and positivity.

Interior

This bright interior scene utilises every weapon in my armoury: patterns and textures draw the eye and join to create a balanced whole, while bold lines, the flattening of the picture plane and multiple viewpoints aim to amplify the expressive power of the piece. Many motifs present in my oeuvre have made a reappearance: a nude painting hangs on the wall; a torso stands on a table; a bowl, vase and fruit give a nod to the classical still life, all combining to create a busy, joyous scene.

This piece sees me pushing the boundaries of my art. Colours, shapes and patterns that shouldn’t work together unite to make a balanced whole. Paint is applied, etched into, removed and repainted. It is swirled, dabbed, blotted and finely detailed. Inspired by modern still life and expressionist use of colour, it aims to evoke the joys of spring in a single piece.

An expressionist still life meets a modern interior scene

Still Life

This is a contemporary take on a classical floral painting. Its bright, vibrant colours represent the start of Spring, while its varying degrees of opacity, texture and layering helps it float between expressionism and symbolism. The detailed vase grounds the piece in the picture plane, while the fast and loose brushstrokes give it an almost dream-like quality, with the hearts adding a touch of the romantic into the already positive piece.

The warm, bright, contrasting colours and the view of the distant sea conjure thoughts of warm weather and the true joy of nature and the great outdoors.

Interior scene

This painting is a mix of my signature interior scenes and a classic expressionist still life. The large vase and black flower are the centrepiece, while the detail of the other vases, objects and flowers draw in the eye and create both depth and perspective. There is a nod to geometric abstraction with the bold black lines, while the pattern-making is modern in its origin, but exists in this piece with a contemporary twist.
